Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains what information CultivateSkill (the "Site") collects, how it's used, and who can see it. We wrote it in plain language on purpose.
1. The Short Version
- We collect only what we need to run classroom tests, lessons, and the shop evidence tracker.
- We never sell student information. No ads, no marketing profiles, no data brokers.
- Student information is used only for educational purposes.
- Only your school's authorized teachers (and the Site's platform administrator) can see your records. Other schools cannot.
2. Student Records and FERPA
CultivateSkill is an independently operated platform, not part of or run by any school or school district. Even so, information about students on the Site (such as scores, attempts, and lesson work) is part of the student's education record. The Site is designed to support each participating school's obligations under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). We act as a service provider under the direction and control of each school, using student information only for that school's educational purposes, consistent with the "school official" exception in FERPA. Each school stays responsible for its own records. We also design the Site with Missouri student privacy requirements in mind.
3. What We Collect
| Category | Examples | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Account info | Name, school Google email, school/domain, role, class roster | Sign in and show the right content |
| Test and lesson data | Attempts, answers, scores, time spent per question, topic results, retake history, review sign-offs | Grading, progress, and improving instruction |
| Student work | Written answers, evidence photos and files, skill log entries, teacher scores | Coursework and grading |
| Waiver record | Email, waiver version, date and time of acceptance | Proof of acceptance |
| Security logs | Sign-in sessions, staff "log in as" audit records | Protect accounts and keep staff access accountable |
We do not collect Social Security numbers, home addresses, phone numbers, payment information, or precise location.
4. How We Use Information
- To sign you in and show you the right classes and features.
- To score tests, track progress, and let teachers grade and give feedback.
- To help teachers see which topics and questions students struggle with.
- To keep the Site secure, fix problems, and back up data.
5. Who Can See Your Information
- Students: their own scores and work.
- Teachers: records for their own school only.
- Platform administrator (Matt Schroer): can access data across schools to run and support the Site. When the administrator views the Site as another staff member, it is recorded in an audit log.
- No one else, unless the law requires it (for example, a court order) or your school directs us to share.
6. Service Providers
We use trusted companies to run the Site. They may store or process data only to provide their services:
- Google — school account sign-in, and file and backup storage.
- Supabase — secure database hosting.
- Vercel — website hosting.
7. What We Don't Do
- We don't sell or rent student information.
- We don't show ads or build profiles for advertising.
- We don't use student information for anything unrelated to school.
- We don't share student information with other schools or outside groups without authorization.
8. Cookies and Embedded Use
The Site uses cookies only to keep you signed in and secure. Because some schools open the Site inside a school web page, our sign-in cookie is set to work in that setting. We don't use advertising or tracking cookies.
9. Keeping and Deleting Data
We keep records as long as your school needs them for instruction and grading. When a school asks, or when data is no longer needed, we will delete it or return it, including from backups within a reasonable time. Waiver acceptance records are kept as a permanent record of consent.
10. Parent and Student Rights
Parents and eligible students can ask to see, correct, or ask about student records. Please start with your school, since the school controls the record. You can also contact us using the information below and we will work with the school to respond.
11. Security
We use reasonable safeguards, including sign-in limited to approved school accounts, role-based access, and encrypted connections. No system is perfectly secure. If we learn of a breach affecting student information, we will notify the affected school promptly so it can meet its notice duties.
12. Children's Privacy
The Site is meant for students in grades 9–12 and their teachers, used through school accounts under school direction. We don't knowingly collect information from children under 13 without school authorization.
13. Changes to This Policy
If we make meaningful changes, we will update the date and version above and notify schools. We will not use existing student information in a new way that is materially different without proper notice and, where required, consent.
